Winters in Dallas are mild and walking is rarely hampered by cool temperatures although freezing rain episodes do occur and footing is treacherous when pedestrian ways and roads are ice coated. Spring storms can be severe and this region is part of “Tornado Alley," so be aware of imminent storms and stay inside when they occur. Summers are very hot and dry with plenty of sun. Pet owners should avoid extreme heat which can cause heat-related illnesses in people and pets. Instead, walk earlier or later in the day when the temperatures cool down.
The terrain is relatively flat and sidewalks and brick paths with wide grassy berms make streetscapes ideal for strolls with your pet. Public areas, streets, and housing complexes are well landscaped with trees, shrubs, and lawns providing cool greenery. There are many commercial areas and a shopping complex located centrally in the neighborhood. Apartments, condominiums, and a high rise apartment provide housing for West Village residents. Watch out for traffic accessing commercial areas. Streets are divided with boulevards and well-marked pedestrian crossings to help foot traffic navigate the area safely.
The Katy Trail Greenway runs along the west side of West Village. Developed on an abandoned railway line, this 3.5-mile long pedestrian trail is paved and the primary traill is 12 feet wide. There are several entrances to the trail providing access and a secondary 8-foot jogging trail is being developed.
Oak Lawn Park is a 14-acre park located to the west with access to the Katy Trail. This 14-acre park has a pet waste station to dispose of your pets leavings and a drinking fountain to replenish your water supply on hot summer days. A shady pavilion, trees and lawns, and more greenways throughout the park make ideal walking locations.
Cole Park is located to the north of the region. This 7-acre park also has a drinking fountain and pet waste disposal facilities and lots of greenways, making it a great dog walker destination. There are also athletic and recreational facilities in the park providing additional activities.
