Downtown Houston is the central business district of the city. Entertainment venues, performance venues, theatres, hotels, nightclubs, bars, restaurants, and shops are plentiful in the area and are easily reached on foot in this highly walkable district. There is an enclosed shopping mall, an open area shopping center, and shops along with the tunnel system. The area is also home to schools, universities, libraries, and museums.

While walking with your dog in the region, you can stop at one of the local dog=friendly restaurants that allow pets to join their owners in outdoor seating venues which include the Grove, Tout Suite, Char Bar, Bombay Pizza Company, and Hard Rock Cafe. Very hot temperatures in the summer can heat pavement in the downtown area which can damage or burn your pup's paws. Doggie boots to protect paw pads from cement and hot surfaces may be advised.

Downtown Houston is surrounded by freeways which include Interstate 10, 45, and 69. The area occupies 1.84 square miles. The Buffalo Bayou and White Oak Bayou meet on the north side in the area that was once the original Houston townsite. High rises, multi-story buildings, and skyscrapers occupy the district giving the downtown Houston area one of the largest and most striking skylines in the U.S.

Apartments, condominiums, and offices occupy upper stories of multi-story structures, often with retail space at street level. The tall buildings create artificial canyons and provide some shade to streetscapes, depending on the time of day. There is little landscaping in this developed urban center.

The terrain is flat and there are no steep hills for foot traffic to navigate. Streets are lined with separate pedestrian sidewalks, many of which have brick surfaces and crosswalks at intersections are often distinguished by these which contrast with the asphalt of city streets.
