Wag! Walkers know La Frontera
La Frontera is located north of Austin in the Round Rock community. This neighborhood straddles the border of Travis and Williamson counties. The area has lots of large commercial establishments with large box stores, institutions, hotels, and smaller shops. The businesses are within walking distance, however, the area was designed more for travel in motor vehicles than on foot. There is a large pet store to pick up supplies and food for your furry friend and a veterinarian located in the commercial area north of the freeway that can be reached on foot.

Austin weather is warm, even in winter, and cold temperatures do not hamper daily walks with your pet. Summer heat can play a factor in outings as soaring temperatures make heat-related illnesses a risk while severe thunderstorms and flash floods that occasionally occur with the heat present walking hazards. Avoid extreme heat and storms when walking with your pet.
What is the terrain like in La Frontera?
The La Frontera neighborhood is centered around route 45, also known as W Louis Henna Boulevard. This road is a very busy multi-lane freeway with service roads and exit ramps that do not provide a safe place for walking with your dog.

Residential homes are mostly concentrated on the south side of the freeway and include apartments, condominium complexes, and moderately sized, single-family homes. Although homes are not large, residential properties are generously sized and have trees and large lawns. Residential streets do not have sidewalks and pedestrians have to share the roads with local traffic which is less than ideal.

There are also some undeveloped tracts of lands in the region providing open spaces but these are not developed greenways and their use as a dog walking area is limited. Commercial areas are not well landscaped and come with increased traffic, making them inhospitable for dog walking. The terrain is flat and there are no steep hills to climb.
How many greenways are there in La Frontera?
La Frontera is mainly made up of commercial developments with some residential housing and, unfortunately, no parks or greenways within the neighborhood. The closest park is a fair walk away or a short drive.

Willow Bend Park is located south of La Frontera. The park features a pool and basketball courts and has open fields and some trees with walking trails where you can stroll with your furry friend.

A little south of this park is the Wells Branch Dog Park. A gazebo provides some shade, but bring water for your pup as all that play is liable to work up a thirst. There is an agility obstacle in this enclosed off-leash dog park and waste disposal stations for convenience. There are some hazards in the park to watch out for with drainage ditches that are marked along one side. Make sure you have good off-leash recall so you can direct your pup to avoid these areas.
