Wag! Walkers know Burning Tree

Burning Tree is a residential neighborhood on the north side of the city of San Antonio. This quiet suburban neighborhood is just under a 30-minute commute from the downtown business district. There are no restaurants or shops within walking distance in the region. A short distance away by car, dog owners can reach pet stores and veterinarians in the commercial areas located to the north and west in adjacent communities.

Dog walkers enjoy warm temperatures all year around with little need to bundle up, even in winter months. Snow is rare and a light jacket is usually sufficient. Rainy weather occurs in the transitional seasons, so some rain gear is recommended to stay dry. Extremely hot, humid conditions occur in the summer which can make long treks with your furry friend uncomfortable. Limit strenuous exercise in the height of the day and make sure you and your pet stay well hydrated and stick to areas where you can find shade.

What is the terrain like in Burning Tree?

The Burning Tree neighborhood is a roughly square neighborhood with Jones Maltsberger Road on the northwest border, Floral Way Drive on the northeast, Tree Crossing Street on the southeast, and Lorrence Creek on the southwest. There is a large natural and recreational greenway on the west and south borders of the neighborhood which give the community a peaceful, park-like feel.

Homes in the area mostly consist of single-family detached structures on well landscaped and maintained private properties. The terrain is relatively level with no steep inclines to climb. There are separate sidewalks on many residential roads in the region, but not all streets have pedestrian ways which necessitates sharing the road with local traffic. Fortunately, this is a quiet neighborhood with few streets, so traffic is not heavy. Private properties, luckily, have mature shade trees which provide some cover to dog walkers and their pets who enjoy strolling the neighborhood.

How many greenways are there in Burning Tree?

Mcallister Park is easily reached on foot for residents and pets of Burning Tree. The park borders the neighborhood on the south and west side. Mcallister has paved and natural walking trails. The longer trail is the “Red Trail” which is almost two miles in length and connects to the shorter “Blue Loop” trail. Good news for area canines is that there is an off-leash, enclosed dog park in the greenway that is 1.5 acres in size. This dog park has a combined area for large and small dogs with doggie water fountains, agility equipment, and fun fake fire hydrants. Your dog can enjoy some free play and socialization with other pups from the region or practice agility abilities.

Another natural greenway is located to the northwest along the Lorrence Creek. This park is a natural treed greenway surrounding the waterway with lots of shade trees and a greenway to explore with your pet.
