Canyon Creek Bluffs is a residential gated community, located a 30-minute commute north of the San Antonio, Texas downtown central business district. There are some local shops and services that pedestrians and pets in the region can access on foot, just north of the entrance to the neighborhood on Blanco Road.
San Antonio has warm weather for walking your dog all year around. Winters are mild, with freezing temperatures and snow being exceedingly rare events. Freezing rain can occur when the temperature cools off and is accompanied by precipitation, making walking difficult with icy surfaces. Wait for surfaces to thaw to avoid injury. Summers are very hot and many dog walkers venture out earlier or later in the day to avoid the heat. Thunderstorms are frequent in warm months and even tornadoes are known to occur occasionally. Check local forecasts to avoid severe storms which can pack damaging winds, electrical activity, and torrential rain that can cause flash flooding.
The terrain is flat and there are no steep hills or grades which would cause overexertion on hot summer days. Homes in the area are large, single-family houses on beautifully landscaped properties.
The residential area has lots of large shade trees providing shelter from the heat and making an attractive backdrop on daily walks. There is natural terrain along the creek on the west side that separates the area from adjacent communities on the west side.
Canyon Creek Bluffs residents and their pets can walk to Voigt Park and the natural area on the border of the large golf course located just east of the community. The park has a pool, recreational facilities, and walking paths for strolls with your pooch. Trails in this area are naturally surfaced and can become muddy after storms with heavy rain, so use caution.
Take a 10-minute drive south to reach Hardberger Park with 300 acres of natural and recreational space. This large greenway has miles of trails to explore with your leashed dog and two off-leash dog parks. The east dog park is 1.8 acres and has a separate section for large and small dogs. The small dog area even has a unique two-story dog house for your pup to play in! The west dog park also has separate off-leash areas for large and small dogs with agility equipment.
