Quiet wooded lots with a stunning view of Bellingham Bay and the San Juan Islands are just a few of the hallmarks of the Chuckanut Village or the Edgemoor neighborhood. You will not find much in the way of retail in the area, as this neighborhood is prized for how rural it feels. Amenities are just north and definitely not in walking distance, but not so far away that it makes it difficult to find all of your pampered pup’s essentials. Veterinarian services are just outside of the perimeter and you will be able to find basic food and supplies in your local grocery stores.

The climate is mild in Bellingham with few exceptions. Cold air coming in from the Fraser Valley can leave the area frigid and may open the door for snow, but these periods are rare and do not last very long. Summer days rarely get over 90, so walking is possible most of the year.

Chuckanut Village or Edgemoor has a very mixed terrain with lots of hills and some areas where walking can be done on fairly flat ground. Depending on what your goals are for walking, you might want to consider hopping in the car and mapping out your path before you put your walking shoes on and pull out the leash. Doing so will let you determine where the hillier parts of the neighborhood are, which route is best for you and your pup, and how to find the terrain that best suits your needs.

Keep in mind that Edgemoor has a lot of rural style roads with lots of trees and other foliage. This can make walking these narrow roads a bit dangerous. Remember to dress in bright clothing and walk against traffic. Be mindful that the amount of foliage that lines these roads can make it difficult for motorists to see you.

There are a lot of wooded areas in and around Chuckanut Village and Edgemoor, some of which consist of undeveloped land that can be used for walking on. Be sure to keep watch for private property signs and avoid certain areas if you are uncertain. There are also several parks in the area, but given the rural feel of this neighborhood, you may find it easier and safer to drive to the parks instead.

Fairhaven Park is up at the northern perimeter of Edgemoor and features large grassy areas as well as trails. The trails intersect with the Whatcom County and Bellingham Interurban Trail and head both north and south to other areas. This trail also intersects with other trails along the way, leaving you with literal miles of trails you can walk along some of which lead to Arroyo Park. This park has an off-leash dog area as well as an abundance of trails for you to explore.
