Silver Beach runs along the northwestern shore of Lake Whatcom which is part of what makes this neighborhood popular. Spectacular vistas, lots of recreational opportunities, as well as its proximity to shopping and downtown make this area a perfect place to walk and play. You won’t find a lot of business in the neighborhood which encompasses the entire northern edge of the lake, but what you will find is restaurants, stores, and a veterinarian hospital for your pampered pup. Just a few miles to the west, you will find shopping and pet stores as well, which are easily reachable by car.
Walking in this area is possible most of the year. Temperatures are typically mild with the occasional extreme temperature that never lasts very long. Your biggest barrier to walking is the Pacific storms that are typical of fall and spring and which sometimes bring heavy rain and wind.
If you love a challenge when walking your dog, Silver Beach has plenty of hilly areas that will get your heart rate up and keep you and your pup trim. There are areas which are flatter, but primarily, you will find hills in most of the neighborhood. If you are just starting out walking, don’t let the hilly terrain discourage you. Most areas have at least a few streets where the terrain is gentler and there is also an abundance of trails and walking paths you can use to work up to walking the bigger hills.
Some of the roads have a very rural feel to them, meaning they are quite narrow with no shoulders and no sidewalks. Many of the streets do not have a lot of traffic, however, so provided that you follow the safety basics of walking, you should be fine. Dress in reflective or at least bright clothing and always walk against traffic.
