Wag! Walkers know Hunts Point
Hunts Point is a neighborhood in the southwest region of the Bronx. Its neighbor, Longwood, is located just north of the area. The boundaries between the two neighborhoods are often blurred since Longwood is a relatively small district. If you head west on Longwood Avenue, you’ll reach William McKinley Houses and, just south of there, you’ll find the neighborhood of Woodstock. When traveling north from Longwood, you’ll reach Foxhurst. East of Hunts Point is the Bronx River which joins with the larger East River to the south.
Puppy Resources is a great groomer service on Bruckner Boulevard. It’s the ideal place to take your doggie pal when they’re in need of a trim. On the other side of town on Westchester Avenue, you’ll find the pet store named Pet Resources. Their affordable prices and wholistic pet treats are a favorite among locals and will be for you as well!
What is the terrain like in Hunts Point?
Hunts Point is in a low-lying and flat area of the Bronx. When you’re walking around the streets here, you’re unlikely to come across much of an incline. The elevation peaks at around 60 feet which is incredibly minimal. Most of the land is no more than around 30 feet above sea level, so it’s a great option for those with low fitness levels or dogs that are old and require more pleasant terrain.
The area is entirely artificial, comprising of a small, but densely populated series of houses and streets. Nearer the waterside, you’ll find a more industrial feel with a number of large depots and distribution units centered here. In fact, Hunts Point is one of the largest food distribution centers in the world and so much of the land in this area is dominated by its use. You’re unlikely to find anything that can be considered natural terrain in the area.
How many greenways are there in Hunts Point?
The largest greenway in the area is the 5-acre Barretto Point Park, located just near the East River in the southwest. There are a number of different activities that take place on this coastal greenway including kayaking, fishing, and a few sports courts. Hunts Point Park is another option in the northeast, just off the Bronx River. Again, there are a few water activities provided here, including canoe launch points. This is a great place to have a barbecue in the summer months and there are picnic benches available year round.
If you head across the river on the Bruckner Expressway towards Clason Point, you can find a large waterside greenway known as Soundview Park. This is a much larger green space than you’ll find in Hunts Point itself, so it’s worth a trip occasionally. Bill Rainy Park is located just off Longwood Avenue and nearby to the metro station for those in the north of the area.
