Wag! Walkers know Town Center (Downtown)
Mountlake Terrace was the site of a large forest and hunting ground for the native Snohomish peoples in the mid 19th century until logging companies completely cleared the area. For many years after, it was the site of farms and ranches. Today, the downtown center of Mountlake Terrace is a residential and retail area for approximately 20,000 people. Both single-family homes and apartments are available in this neighborhood. There is no shortage of veterinarians, pet stores, and groomers in the area, so Fido has easy access to everything a spoiled pup could possibly want. The area also has no shortage of places to eat and access to groceries.
Weather, like much of the Seattle area, is mild, but it has regular storms consisting mainly of rain and wind. These are the main things that might make this region hard to walk in but from late spring to early fall, the weather can be quite enjoyable.
What is the terrain like in Town Center (Downtown)?
The elevations in Mountlake Terrace are mixed, leaving you to decide whether you are out for a pleasant walk or want it to be a serious workout. If Fido is putting on an extra roll you are worried about, then starting out slow and adding in more challenging hills later might make a lot of sense. On the other hand, if you and Fido are training, then do not hesitate to tackle some of the more challenging hills in this area.
Much of the community has sidewalks and there is typically some sort of grass or dirt that can make a softer landing for your pup on the shoulders of the road. The neighborhoods tend to be quiet, so once you get off the main highways, you can expect to find quiet streets with not a lot of traffic. There are also lakes and trails that can keep your dog off the hard concrete.
How many greenways are there in Town Center (Downtown)?
There are a couple of nice greenways in Mountlake Terrace. The largest one is Ballinger Lake Park which has some wetlands and a lot of green space for Fido to run in. The park used to be a golf course and much of the old turf is still there. You will find some unpaved trails to walk and there are also a few picnic areas.
Terrace Creek Park to the east is 60 acres and has wooded hiking trails and grassy lawns that Fido is certain to enjoy. Most of the parks in these neighborhoods have unpaved trails that make a great alternative if your pup needs a softer surface for their arthritic bones.
Finally, Terrace Ridge Park at the southeast corner of Mountlake Terrace is a smaller park at 6 acres but has a walking trail, grass, and a water fountain for you to fill Fido’s drinking bowl up with.
