the University of Washington and overlooking Lake Washington, this neighborhood
is a dog walker’s paradise.
You will not find a lot of businesses in this area and
you will have to drive to pick up any of your favorite pup’s necessities, but there
are plenty of places to get a cup of coffee or a quick snack along the southeastern edge of the community. There is a veterinarian hospital close at hand should
you need one, but the area is mostly residential and quiet.
The
weather here really makes walking pleasurable. Overall, Seattle weather is mild
with little in the way of weather extremes. Freezing temperatures may hang
around for a few days at most and snow is so rare that there are many years
where you will be lucky to see any snow at all.
What is the terrain like in Hawthorne Hills?
This neighborhood is built on a hill, so expect that much of
the walking you do will include at least some elevation changes. Not every hill
is steep. Running north to south, the hills are mild enough that beginners
should be able to handle them with no trouble at all. Once you start heading
down the hill, the roads become more challenging to navigate on foot. If

Hawthorne Hills is a small neighborhood, but it is ideally located with plenty of alternatives to walking on the streets. The Burke Gilman Trail runs right through the southeast part of the neighborhood and goes for miles to the north and the south. The vast majority of the trail has a greenway on either side of it, so your pup has plenty of places to get off the concrete and enjoy a bit of grass.
The Burke Gilman Playground and Park at the south end of the neighborhood is 7 acres has trails and open grassy areas where you can play with your pup. Magnuson Park at Sandpoint is a 350-acre park that used to be a military base during World War II. There are many of the structures and landmarks still in the park, so a stroll through is a stroll through history! There is plenty of grass, wetlands, trees, and beach to explore as well.
