Wag! Walkers know Meadowbrook
Often considered part of Lake City, this area actually has little to compare it to the feel of Lake City to the north and Lake City Way to the east. Labeled by locals as deceptively quiet, it is said that you can get lost in this neighborhood due to its lack of commerciality.
Other than a few small restaurants, you will need to venture out to find any of the amenities you and your four-legged wonder might need. The good news is that there is a pet store just outside of Meadowbrook as well as a place to get grooming and medical services for your pup.
The weather in this area can get wet and windy at times, but you won’t see hardly any snow as a general rule. Year-round, your only barrier to walking is heavy rains and winds which usually only last a day or two before there is a window for walking again.
What is the terrain like in Meadowbrook?
Meadowbrook has both hilly and flat areas with the flat area in the central spot of the neighborhood likely being the reason for its name. The south, north, and west edges of the neighborhood all have hills of varying elevations. If you want to walk without having to deal with hills, you can park down around the Meadowbrook Playfield and walk all through that area without having to worry about overdoing it.
All the roads through here are very quiet, but many of them are narrow and have no sidewalks. There are a lot of trees, so be especially careful at intersections. Although there is not a lot of traffic, visibility can be impaired by the amount of vegetation.
There are two large schools in the neighborhood and these can draw a lot of traffic during school hours. This can make 110th Street and 115th Street a bit difficult to navigate when school is opening and letting out.
How many greenways are there in Meadowbrook?
Meadowbrook Playfield is the primary greenway in this area. There is a large grassy area as well as lots of trees. While it is not really big enough and lacks the paths to be a place to exercise, it is a nice place to stop while on your walk. This is the only public greenway where you can take your dog in Meadowbrook, but a few blocks to the east is access to the Burke Gilman Trail which offers you access to 27 miles of walkways. This is more than enough space for even the serious dog walker.
Just to the south and along the lake is Matthews Beach Park which can serve as both a destination for dog walkers and a place to park your car if the trail is too far to walk to. If you would like to let your dog run, you can go just a bit further south to Magnuson Park which has an off-leash area for your furry friend.
