Wag! Walkers know Rainier Valley

Rainier Valley is a region located on the south side of Seattle, Washington that includes several neighborhoods. Rainier Valley is a diverse neighborhood with a population of over 40,000. Residential areas and commercial areas are somewhat separate, however, most areas have local businesses such as restaurants and convenience stores that can be reached on foot and there are trendy eateries and shops, art galleries, boutiques, and other unique services distributed in the different Rainier Valley neighborhoods. Many areas of this larger neighborhood are also designated historic districts and were originally designed for pedestrians to get around easily.

Dog walkers in Rainier Valley enjoy beautiful, sunny, and usually dry summer weather for walking with their pooch. Extreme heat and thunderstorms are not common and are generally not significant factors. Winters are cool and wet. When the temperature dips below freezing, icy conditions can be created on walkways, so use caution to avoid slips and falls.

What is the terrain like in Rainier Valley?

Rainier Valley is a large region comprising several neighborhoods including the area in the north around the Mount Baker neighborhood. The region is located on the west shore of Lake Washington and has lots of natural green spaces along the water.

Because this is a large area, there is a variety of homes in the region. Apartments, condominiums, and single-family homes are present here. Many older craftsman-style homes beautify the neighborhood on well landscaped and maintained properties, but there are new builds and homes with different architectural styles in the area as well.

The terrain is hilly, some areas more than others. Some communities have steep hills that can create a problem for pedestrians and pets that have mobility issues, so plan your route to avoid inclines if that is an issue. There are sidewalks throughout this well developed older neighborhood, so you and your pup won't have to share the road with traffic.

How many greenways are there in Rainier Valley?

Rainier Valley has plenty of green spaces and parks. Seward Park is located on a peninsula jutting out into Lake Washington. This large 300-acre park is forested and provides a natural habitat for eagles. There is a 2.4-mile path for dog walkers and their pups to travel the park.

On the northwest corner, dog owners can visit the Blue Dog Pond Dog Park. This park is a large enclosed off-leash dog area where your pup can romp! Genesee Park also has a large off-leash area. At 2.7 acres and securely fenced with double gate entrances, this is a popular dog park. It is gravel surfaced and has a separate small dog area.

Other parks in the area include Colman, Mt. Baker Park, Lakeridge Park, Beer Sheva Park, Pritchard Island Beach, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park, and Rainier Park. Several long park boulevards stretch through the community providing greenways to traverse the neighborhood.
