Just north of the University of Washington and to the east of Green Lake and Northgate, Wedgewood is a quiet, modest middle-class neighborhood. Centrally located so that it is close to downtown, it is also far enough away that it still has a suburban feel to it.
Commercial areas are limited to a small portion of Lake City Way and 35th Avenue which runs north and south through the neighborhood. Amenities for Fido are close by, but may require a car to reach. Your closest pet stores run along Lake City Way while the closest vet is just north of Wedgewood. You will find cafes and coffee shops along the main road through the neighborhood and a store or two, but not much else for dog parents.
The weather makes walking easy most of the year. Pacific storms are your biggest obstacles in the fall and winter. Temperatures stay fairly mild and snow is a rarity.
What is the terrain like in Wedgewood?
When it comes to elevation, Wedgewood is quite mixed. There are some really nice flat areas that are good for walking if you and your pup are new to the pastime. Much of the southeastern corner is flat as well as some of the northwest area of the neighborhood. There is a ravine on the east end that makes for some challenging walking.
Some areas have sidewalks for walking on, but others do not. The streets closest to the ravine on the east side not only do not have sidewalks, but the roads are narrow, winding, and steep. If you plan to walk in this area, use caution to ensure that you are as visible as possible. You can expect that much of this neighborhood is very quiet and even intersections will not slow you and your pup down much. The only exceptions to this are 35th Street and Lake City Way. Both roads have a heavier traffic load.
How many greenways are there in Wedgewood?
Greenways are limited inside of Wedgewood, but you will find a few nice places to take your favorite pup that are not too far away. Inside the neighborhood, there is a small park on the east side worth mentioning. Inverness Ravine Park is nothing but a small natural area with no amenities. Walkers say it is hard to find, but if you live in the area, it can make for a nice place to take your dog.
Matthews Beach is just a few blocks away and might make a better option if you want to let your pup enjoy a bit of grass. This is a lakefront beach with hiking paths and a public bathroom. It is just a few blocks off of the eastern boundary.
The Burke Gilman Trail also runs through here and, along this stretch of the trail, there is an abundance of greenway available. Dahl Playfield is at the southwest end and offers a nice grassy area with trees.
