Parkwood is a modest middle-class working neighborhood filled with families living both in single-family homes and in apartments. Bordered on one side by Aurora Ave. and Interstate 5 on the other, the only services you will find are those that line Aurora Ave. Along the main highway, you will find food and stores, but it is not the safest place to walk with no sidewalks, so any forays to find amenities might be best be done by car. There are grooming facilities within the neighborhood and a veterinarian is also just on the other side of the highway.
Shoreline weather can be a bit unfriendly from time to time as the area is prone to heavy storms. Sometimes that can mean heavy rain and wind and other times it can translate into snow and cold temperatures. Fortunately, it does not snow very often here, and temperatures are not extreme enough to stop you and your adventurous pup from exploring.
What is the terrain like in Parkwood?
Like most of Shoreline, there are not a lot of sidewalks even on the main roads. Even the main highway has nothing more than a concrete shoulder. While this does not cause a lot of problems on the side streets that make up the majority of this neighborhood, be sure to use care when crossing the main highway. Shoulders are typically either gravel or grass which is a lot softer than concrete. Many dogs are sensitive to walking in gravel and may prefer the road. If you let them walk in the grass, remember that much of the grass you are likely to encounter are private property front yards.
There are a fair amount of hills in this neighborhood, but they are interspersed with flat areas as well. Parkwood is a great place to interval train as you can mix in the hills with some easier walking, making a route that will help both you and your pup get fit.
How many greenways are there in Parkwood?
There is only one greenway inside of Parkwood near the interstate called Twin Ponds Park. In addition to the ponds, there is plenty of grassy areas, trees, picnic areas, and trails to enjoy. The trails go through some wooded areas and if you live near the park, it makes for a really nice walk on a hot summer day. Outside of the neighborhood, there are smaller greenways scattered about that make alternatives if you or Fido are looking for a change of pace.
To the north is McCormick Park, James Keough Park, and Meridian Park while Darnell Park is situated to the northwest of the area. To the south is Bitter Lake. There is a large field there and many dog owners have been known to let their dogs play in the lake.
Finally, many people take their dogs down to the beach off of Puget Sound or to Shoreview Park to enjoy a day outside of the neighborhood.
