Wag! Walkers know Richmond Beach

Richmond Beach hugs the Puget Sound shore, offering its residents waterfront views and easy access to beach-bum living. Most of the neighborhood is made up of family or retiree households and public schools. However, it's not all just homes and elementary schools. A West-coast specific grocer and several locally-owned restaurants are conveniently located within walking distance of residences, making a quick run for milk and eggs or picking up take-out a breeze.

This tight-knit community is proud to call Shoreline, Washington home. Members band together, especially in the spring and summer months, to put on events and festivals for everyone to enjoy. Many of these are free and held in public spaces, such as the Strawberry Festival, which takes place every year in May, hosted at Richmond Beach Community Park.

There's also the Kruckeberg Botanic Garden which is a worthy destination, not just to locals, but to surrounding Shoreline areas as well. If you plan to visit the breathtaking grounds of the Kruckeberg Botanic Garden, however, you'll have to leave any four-legged companions behind as no dogs are allowed.

When it isn't warm with juicy berries and blooming flowers to enjoy, residents attend Christmas markets either in their hometown or head down to Seattle, only a 20-minute drive away, where infamous Pike Place trades in its summertime cherries and peonies for locally-grown Christmas trees and mugs of comforting hot cider.

What is the terrain like in Richmond Beach?

Along the Northwest coast of Shoreline, a fair amount of elevation can be present. It's no exception for Richmond Beach, which gives some of its residents unencumbered views of the Puget Sound thanks to the steep cliffsides they find their homes built upon. Most inclinations are gradual and so nothing too abrupt or steep will ask a lot of you when walking with your pet.

Some older areas of the neighborhood may not have sidewalks so practice safe pedestrian protocol by facing oncoming traffic and walking as far to the side of the road as possible. Keep your dog on a tight leash, especially around corners or curves- Shoreline's infrastructure is not on a grid system, so many of the roads are winding.

Once further east toward State Route 99, the surroundings are less suburban, with many fast food drive-throughs, gas stations, motels, and a higher concentration of cars. The main road to this busy area is Richmond Beach Road or 185th Street, so when walking your dog around Richmond Beach, you may want to avoid trekking this area, especially if your dog is frightened by or easily distracted by lots of noise and movement.

How many greenways are there in Richmond Beach?

One of the smaller parks Richmond Beach has to offer, Kayu Kayu Ac Park may be described by some as a "pocket park". Nestled at the front of waterfront properties, the park gives anyone the opportunity to enjoy the majestic views of Puget Sound. If your dog is triggered by loud sounds, this may not be the park for you as it has frequent trains running by only a few yards away.

Richmond Beach Community Park's title speaks for itself. Located next to the public library and complete with water views and a playground, this park was designed with residents in mind. Wide and open space offers well-behaved dogs an area to run and play, but be courteous to others who may not be comfortable with an off-leash animal.

Although it has no forested trails, Richmond Beach Saltwater Park is still one of the most popular outdoor destinations in the Shoreline community. With beach access, a spacious parking lot, restrooms, picnic and grilling areas, and public artwork, the park can be busy, especially in the summer or on the weekends. This is a great place for - and frequented by - dog owners, especially since the beach offers an opportunity for their pets to have a splashing good time. If you aren't a beach person - all that sand, too many people, a hot sun with no shade - nearby is the Strandberg Preserve, which is tucked inside of a neighborhood and offers thickly forested, shaded trails.

Typically utilized for sports, Hillwood Park, when not in use by a soccer team, offers open grassy fields for a canine to romp and roll around in. There's also a fair amount of old trees in the park, so when playtime is over, you and Fido can rest in the shade.
