Thorton Park

If you drive just 15 minutes from Harvey, you and Fido will find yourselves in Wampum Lake Woods. This large forest preserve has plenty of things for you and your pooch to do, see, and sniff! Not only is there an abundance of lush green areas, but there also lakes, sports fields and plenty of picnic areas. You can spend the day resting, eating, relaxing, or even fishing with your pooch. Just make sure you take your own water, food, toys and doggie poop bags. You could even take your bike to the park with you so your pup can run alongside you while you are cycling on the trails.

River Oaks Dr

Drive only fifteen minutes from Harvey to find Forest Preserves of Cook County. This large forest preserve is pretty bare bones (pun totally intended!), as it only contains a forest -- no playgrounds, no sports fields. This is the perfect destination if you want to spend some time alone with your pooch in the wilderness. Consider taking a few hours to have a wonderful picnic with your pooch. Take a picnic blanket, plenty of food, water, toys, and doggie poop bags. And don't forget to take a good book to read when your pooch is tired and napping after a long day of playing!

South East Dixmoor

Technically, Kickapoo Meadows is in another city, but lucky for you, it is still only a five-minute drive from Harvey! This large forest preserve is a giant stretch of land where you and your pup can run, relax, and play. The park also has its own landing strip for small planes, so you may even see a plane or two land. This bare forest preserve doesn't offer any amenities for pups or their parents, so you will have to take your own doggie toys, water, waste bags, and leash. Trust us -- you both will have a pawtastic time here!

Halsted St

There aren't a lot of places near Harvey where you can go to see deer roam freely. That's why you need to make the five-minute drive to Whistler Woods Forest Preserve in Riverdale, Illinois! This large forest preserve doesn't have a dog park, but it does have plenty of open, lush, green space for you and your pooch to walk and play in. Plus, if you're looking for a volunteering opportunity, the park invites people to volunteer to clean up and maintain the park. Since this is not a dog park, you will definitely have to keep your pooch leashed.

Hegewisch

Although the trip to Wolf Lake Memorial Park will take you about half an hour, it is well worth it. This park has two large lakes surrounded by parks and greenery, and is located in two states -- Indiana and Illinois. This park has a ton of activities for you and your pooch! You can walk around the park, run, or bike and get plenty of exercise. You can also spend the day out on the water with your pooch! Soak in some sun, read a good book, or catch some fish. You can even cook it up on the grills in the park!
