Wag! Walkers know Bristol

Bristol, Arkansas, is about 200 miles outside of Bella Vista. This green, lake-dotted farmland is a prime example of the heartland of America. Streams running through Bristol help to irrigate the many acres of farmland. Areas of scrubby tree growth and shrubbery run along streams and border ponds where farming is not taking place. The Muddy Bayou, near the center of Bristol, offers a lovely natural deviation from the flat farmland. Walking along the creek allows your dog to experience natural changes in elevation as short cliffs form along the river.

You have a great chance of seeing wildlife like deer, foxes, raccoons, and all sorts of birds along a natural creek like the Bayou. The little creeks flood some areas of the bayou, making for swampy ground that is not ideal for walking. You can walk along a country road like Bull Creek road to get the best of the marsh scenery and wildlife while sparing yourself and your dog from the mud.

What is the terrain like in Bristol?

Bristol is mostly flat, the terrain broken into farmland or pastures generally divided by natural creeks and ponds that have been diverted for irrigation. Hiking along natural areas of the creeks can be fun for you and your dog, but be aware that creeks often empty into marshy areas that are not ideal for hiking. While your dog may enjoy splashing through marshy, muddy creeks, you are less likely to find this pleasurable. If you are planning on some serious adventuring or are hunting with your dog, wear hip-high waders for the muddy parts of the bayou.

There are many wooded areas as well, although trees generally remain fairly small and thick with undergrowth. Hiking through the woods can be pleasant during hot summer times and can protect you from cold Arkansas winter winds. Consider hiking along the edge of fields next to the forest for the best of protection from the elements while not having to fight through the undergrowth.

How many greenways are there in Bristol?

Bristol glows green from above. Much of the greenery is farmland, but there are many wild areas too. The area around the muddy bayou is mostly natural, although some streams have been diverted for agriculture. Some areas are swampy and marshy, home to lots of wildlife like water birds. You have a great chance of seeing deer or other large wildlife in these marshy areas.

Large forested clumps allow for natural exploration as well. The forest is generally scrubby and thick, but some areas offer more mature trees. These forested areas are big enough to let you feel like you are truly in the wild. Frequent ponds and streams provide lovely natural settings in the midst of the forest, as well as natural guides to walk along so you do not become lost hiking through the woods.

Few natural clearings exist, but you may spot beautiful wildlife just walking along the many pastures and farm fields of Bristol.
