Wag! Walkers know Cheviot

Cheviot is a charming little neighborhood nestled along the shoreline of Loch Lomond. Cheviot Lane stretches along the main body of the lake where it narrows in the south and along a small finger of the lake that stretches towards Dunedin Lane.  Cheviot Lane forms a pleasant circle that can be walked around for a complete neighborhood walk with views of the lake. Within the circle formed by Cheviot Lane is another, smaller circle of homes. Despite the relatively close proximity of these homes to the outer circle of homes, the thick Arkansas forest prevents you from seeing through, or even getting a sense that you are near other homes or a lake.

Walking along the streets of Cheviot is pleasant despite the lack of sidewalks, especially due to the lack of through traffic and therefore relatively low traffic overall. The lake can be glimpsed through the trees along much of Cheviot Lane.

What is the terrain like in Cheviot?

It can be pleasant to hike around the forest here, as the trees are tall and are well enough spaced that you can get through in some areas. For a more adventurous hike, try going through the woods down to the lake. While in most areas the lots run up against each other, leaving no room for access to the lake without going through somebody's yard, at the far end of the neighborhood there is a forest valley where you can get to the lake.

If you go to the tip of the finger of Loch Lomond, you can find an area of woods that is undeveloped and good for exploring. Hiking can be dense here, and areas near the lake may be boggy so make sure you and your dog are both prepared with the proper footgear, tick protection, and other precautions.

In the summer months, it can be pleasant to swim in the lake for a  new experience and a change from the typical walk. Swimming is very good for your dog's hips and legs and provides a natural outlet for energy that will wear your dog out without exhausting you.

How many greenways are there in Cheviot?

While much of the area around Cheviot is developed, there are large swaths of land where thick, mature forests are allowed to grow. especially at the tip of the finger of Loch Lomond. In this area, the forest covers a large expanse leading away from the lake. You have a good chance of seeing wildlife in this section where wildlife can move directly from the forest to the lake without crossing through somebody's yard. You could see elk, deer, foxes, or all sorts of other wildlife.

If you look out over the lake, or take a canoe or other small craft, you are likely to see all kinds of waterfowl, both permanent and migratory. You can also see all kinds of other wildlife from the water, as they come to drink or graze on short grass areas near the lake. The valley between Cheviot Lane and Cheviot Place is also a good place to see wildlife since the forest is quite thick here and the low area provides shelter.
