Wag! Walkers know Harborough

The Harborough district is a charming neighborhood with large, attractive homes on or near a narrow finger of Lake Brittany. The neighborhood forms a sort of peninsula into the lake. Houses are well set back with huge, expansive green lawns. The ground slopes gently up and then down towards the lake. While there are no sidewalks, walking along the wide streets around Harborough is pleasant. Homes are carved from mature forest for lovely forest views.

Even this narrow finger of Lake Brittany feels wide and expansive from the shoreline. The views over the lake are gorgeous, and lakeside breezes can cool you on walks on hot Arkansas days.

If you are feeling very hot, you and your dog can even take a plunge in the lake. While one side of the neighborhood has homes up to the lake, the other side of the roundabout features forest that goes right up to the shoreline. If you are in the mood for a serious hike through some natural beauty, go through the woods to the shoreline on this side.

What is the terrain like in Harborough?

This gently hilly neighborhood of Harborough offers natural hiking through mature forest, pleasant neighborhood strolls along wide streets, or wading or hiking along the shoreline of Lake Brittany. While forest might be a bit thinner in the fall or winter, it is a lush forest that requires serious hiking. Not many footpaths exist through the forest.

Forest thins some as you get down to the lake, so as long as you are wearing waders hiking along the lake or wading through shallow areas can be very pleasant for you and your dog. Your dog will like taking a swim or wading up to her belly in shallow water, while you will enjoy the cooling lake breezes. Where the finger of the lake narrows into a stream you can enjoy hiking through sparser forest around some rockier terrain. Views along the little creek are lovely as well, and more natural than views of homes across the lake.

How many greenways are there in Harborough?

This neighborhood is composed of large homes on big, grassy lots, carved out of wild, mature forest. While there are developments scattered throughout this area, they are widely spaced, allowing lots of thick forest between. This forest is home to a variety of wildlife, from deer and elk to foxes, raccoons, and a variety of birds.

Lake Brittany provides a home for seasonal waterfowl which you can glimpse hiking along the lake's edge. The lake also serves as a water source for animals, which you are likely to see in the morning or evening. Hiking along the narrow river where the finger of this lake ends is likely to reveal wildlife taking advantage of the safe water source nestled in the deep forest.

Even the shoreline where houses are more prevalent can be a great place to see all kinds of wildlife, as well as enjoying the natural beauty of huge old trees draping over the water.
