Wag! Walkers know Saint Andrews

Homes are widely spaced in St. Andrews. The forest between them has some very large well-developed trees and many smaller trees. In the winter, hiking is possible in the forest around St. Andrews and you can be rewarded with beautiful views of Arkansas forest and wildlife. The small hills that fill the forested areas between neighborhoods provide shelter for wildlife and an interesting, varied terrain for your dog.

If you would rather stick to the streets and don't feel up to some serious hiking, there is a network of neighborhood streets around Saint Andrews for you to explore. This extended network of streets means that you won't be left looking for a new route. There is also a good chance that you can find a new route home from the one you took out.

If you want a little more exploration than the street and are not up to hiking through the woods, there is a strip of land below the power line that is kept mowed and open. This can be a delightful place to walk and get some sunshine while still being protected from the wind.

What is the terrain like in Saint Andrews?

The terrain around Saint Andrews is gently hilled and the forest is thick. Depending on your level of dedication to hiking, you may enjoy traversing the thick woods around St. Andrews or you may prefer sticking to the street.

The gently rolling hills mean that the streets around St. Andrews are good for wheeled exercise with your dog like skateboards, rollerblades, or bikes. Most yards have plenty of grassy or hardscaped area for you to slow down or to land without hitting a tree if you lose control. That said, sometimes the hills become abruptly steeper, so know where you are going before you start.

To get away from the streets and the trees, you can go to the mowed area under the power lines in the valley between Saint Andrews and Rackwick. This area is a welcome relief from the constant heavy tree coverage. While it will get more breezes than the deep forest, it is still sheltered from the winds for a pleasant walk in the cold Arkansas winter.

How many greenways are there in Saint Andrews?

There is plenty of room for hiking between St. Andrews and surrounding neighborhoods. Since the forest is so thick, especially in the summertime, you may not enjoy hiking around Saint Andrews unless you are a very dedicated hiker. You have a good chance of seeing wildlife even from the roads here, since the houses are far enough apart.

If you would like a break from the constant trees, you can go to the valley between Saint Andrews Drive and Rackwick Lane. This area is kept mowed since it runs underneath a power line. You have a great chance of seeing all sorts of wildlife that is seeking out the mowed area, as well as some sunshine. You are especially likely to see wild turkey, cranes, or other birds in this cleared area since they enjoy foraging in the rare open space.
