We know an awful lot about dogs, some may say a “pawful” lot. But every once in awhile we learn something about a breed that tickles our fancy. These seven facts about the lovable Corgi will show you just how unique your little buddy is.
1. Corgi means “dwarf dog”
In the Welsh language, “Cor” means dwarf and “gi” means dog.
2. Southern California Hosts an Annual Corgi Meet-up
SoCal Corgi Beach Day started in 2012. The first event only had 12 attendees while the last one had over 600. Some owners dress up their dogs in costumes – such as sharks.
3. They Make Great Watchdogs
This is due to their attentive nature and loud bark.
4. They Possess Double Layers
Pembroke Corgis have a double coat that sheds once in the Fall and again during the Spring. The second coat of a Pembroke Corgi is a soft undercoat. These double layers consist of a long outer coat and a short insulated inner coat. Due to these double layers, Pembroke Corgis are known for their heavy shedding.
5. They’re the Royal Dog
Corgis have been part of the English monarchy for over 70 years. Queen Elizabeth II had over 30 corgis since childhood.
6. They are Very Athletic
They were originally herders and are surprisingly fast runners.
7. There are Two Main Corgi Types
Over the years, Corgis evolved into two different types, the Pembroke and Cardigan. Although people are familiar with these two breeds today, they were not recognized as separate breeds until the 1930s.
