Rahway is a city in southern New Jersey and is considered part of the New York metro area. Downtown is generally from the Robinson Branch of the Rahway River following it around to East Hazelwood Avenue. Rahway is attracting a younger, artsy crowd and is doing its best to keep up with modern landscaping and a downtown design that is pedestrian-friendly. This is mostly a sidewalk-heavy experience for you and your four-legged friend. Planned treescapes can be found and the city provides a walking map on their website. Luciano’s on Main Street welcomes furry friends at their outdoor tables, but don’t just drop in as it’s best to call ahead and plan a stop during your walk.

Rahway’s climate is hot and humid in the summer and winter temperatures can drop into the teens. You will want to plan accordingly to protect your dog from the weather conditions. Hot sidewalks can harm paws and shivering cold pups can shorten walks.

Expect mostly concrete and artificial turf in downtown. Around the newer areas, you will find the brick pavers that offer a different feel on sensitive paws. There are planned treescapes, but green spaces in downtown proper are limited. This is an artsy community with pop-up art around the area. Be watchful as these exhibits are temporary and could harm a curious pup! This is a metro area as well, so automotive traffic will have the potential to be heavy. Follow pedestrian traffic laws and keep your canine friend on the leash.

Even though the terrain is relatively flat, watch your dog for overexertion that can be common when you and your pup just plug along and lose track of how long or how far you have walked. The Rahway train station is located here, so be aware that this will be a highly trafficked pedestrian area and the loud noises from the train may spook skittish pups.

Berzinec Park is a small park in the northwest corner of the downtown area. It has a playscape for children and tennis courts. Veteran’s Memorial Field is north of downtown as well.

River Front Park is accessed near Route 1 in the southern tip of the downtown area. It is a bike and walking trail along the river that provides wonderful unexpected views in a metro area. Water Front Park is right below this area and both parks host small wildlife with a few deer sometimes sneaking through. You will want to monitor your canine friend's interest in the wildlife so they don't pull you off your feet during a lunge for a squirrel!

Walking paths are found throughout both parks with a few small boardwalk bridges. Trees and flora abound with some planned structures for shade and rest. Watch for grass eating, flower sniffing pups that could get into something itchy!
