Wag! Walkers know Discovery Bay
The community of Discovery Bay does, in fact, sit on a small bay along the Banana River. It is one of
the only single-family home neighborhoods this far north and sits next door
to a large group of townhomes. Half of the homes even have docks jutting out into the water! In addition, living here puts you and
your dog within walking distance of two large public parks where both of you
are welcome to come and play.
There are several restaurants along Astronaut Boulevard and a gas station as well, but beyond this, there are more parking lots for the cruise ship guests than any other
form of business. However, if you go south on A1A,
it will take you to a Publix supermarket where you can buy food for everyone in
your family. A little
further south is the West Cocoa Beach Causeway where you will find the central
shopping district and plenty of restaurants!
What is the terrain like in Discovery Bay?
Even though Astronaut Boulevard is within walking distance and generates a significant amount of traffic all
day long, Discovery Bay is a tranquil oasis amid
so much hustle and bustle.
There are flat and easy-to-navigate sidewalks for you and your pooch to make use of, however, there will still be some traffic
as people come and go to work.
The peaceful atmosphere will only persist as long as you stay away from the
entrance to the Park Port Canaveral Cruise parking lot that has an entrance on Thrum.
If you feel you must take
your dog walking along A1A, be sure you use a short leash that allows you to
maintain control of your pooch just in case the traffic causes them to become
nervous and jumpy. Early mornings are the best
time of day to take your pooch out as the temperature is cooler and there is less
traffic.
How many greenways are there in Discovery Bay?
Living in Discovery Bay has the advantage of putting the two
of you within walking distance of two of the biggest parks in the city. Here in
Cape Canaveral, most city parks are open to pets since the beach is closed to them. The parks, luckily, provide waste bags
and trash receptacles for your use!
Manatee Sanctuary Park offers paved walking trails that take
you around this vast space and the lake it contains. The park also offers public restrooms, picnic pavilions, and plenty
of grass for you and your pup to run around on. This
is a very popular park, especially with those who live close by!
Next door to Manatee Sanctuary Park is Banana River Park which
is more sports oriented with a soccer pitch, shuffleboard courts, and a miniature
putting green. This park also offers a vast area of grass where you
and your dog can run around and have fun playing until you have just enough energy
left for the walk home.
