Wag! Walkers know County
County is a small
neighborhood of large single-family homes sitting in the "V" formed at
the point where A1A splits into South Orlando Drive. There are six
houses here, but plenty more in the surrounding communities. The homes in this
general area have large shaded yards with plenty of grass for a dog to run
around on, but you won't find much in the way of sidewalks around for
you and your pup to use.
The other thing you are not likely to find much of is places to shop or eat out in this part
of town. While this could make a person feel out of touch with the rest of the region, you are just a four-minute drive to the north
from the Minuteman Causeway. Here, you will find the Cocoa Beach fire and police departments, as well as the city offices. More importantly, there are two supermarkets and several restaurants for you and your family to dine at.
What is the terrain like in County?
Both South Orlando and South Brevard can be very busy at certain times
of the day. However, South Orlando would have to
be the busiest of the two this far south
as it continues all the way down
to Key West. Also referred to as Florida Highway A1A, this highway runs along the
east coast of Florida from just short of the Georgia state line to Key West. As
you can imagine, it stays busy from early in the morning until late at night.
Without much in the way of sidewalks, you and your pooch are
going to spend a lot of time sharing the roads with the many motor vehicles that
pass through daily. This far south, you will find walking along the flat residential
streets will be less stressful. However, if you want to take your walks when there
is little traffic, get out early in the morning before rush hour starts.
How many greenways are there in County?
The nearest green space in County is one block to the east. Here, you and your pup will find the Atlantic coast and its associated beaches.
In Cocoa Beach, dogs are permitted from 4th Street South down to the northern boundary of Murkshe Park. Dogs can be on the
beaches for a few hours out of the day, must always be on a leash.
At each public parking spot, there are
pet waste disposal containers for you to use, so be sure you make use of them and help
keep the beaches clean!
The nearest park is Ramp Road Park, one mile to the north on
Ramp Road. The park has two playgrounds and a walking track that both you and your
dog can use to get in your daily exercise. It also has a small boat launch, public
restrooms, and acres of grass for you and your dog to romp around on.
