Wag! Walkers know Tufted Oaks
Tufted Oaks is a small townhome community on South Brevard Avenue between 2nd and 3rd. It's located just south of the Minuteman Causeway that leads out to the Cocoa Beach Junior-Senior High School and the Cocoa Beach Country Club and public golf course. The townhouses have plenty of shade, but very little in the way of grass for your pup to play on.
Along the Minuteman Causeway, there are several small shops, the fire and police departments, and a number of great little places to eat. If you need more than this, you only have to drive a little further to the north. Along the West Cocoa Beach Causeway and in the nearby vicinity there is a Winn-Dixie Supermarket and several more stores and restaurants for you and your family to sample. Taking the causeway west will take you to Merritt Island and the nearest Walmart, along with the Merritt Island Mall.
What is the terrain like in Tufted Oaks?
At certain times of the day, South Brevard Avenue can be a bustling road with so many of those who live there heading to or coming home from work. In addition, the area is mostly residential, which means lots of kids and school buses during the school year. Sidewalks are a rare commodity in the area, but on the other side of South Brevard, there are a few neighborhoods for you and your dog to make good use of, especially considering the area is primarily flat.
Being in a primarily residential area means there are likely to be plenty of other pedestrians navigating the roads along with you. If your pooch is slightly skittish or nervous, you may want to redirect your outings into the nearby parks or beach areas to provide them with more space to do their own thing. Otherwise, choose other hours of the day to venture out.
How many greenways are there in Tufted Oaks?
The nearest park is Ramp Road Park, located only a few blocks to the south. This park offers playgrounds for the kids, basketball and tennis courts, a walking track, a boat launch, and plenty of grass for you and your pup to romp around on. It's also the only park within walking distance.
However, one and a half blocks to the east are the beaches! They are open to dogs in most areas for a few hours at specific times. Here, you and your dog can walk for miles on the sand and in the surf while enjoying the fresh ocean air and sunshine. Keep a few things in mind as you visit these coastal areas: Obey the hours, clean up any messes, and always keep your dog on a leash! During the warmer months, take your walks during the morning hours when it’s a lot cooler and there aren't many people around.
