Wag! Walkers know Dixon s Homes
Dixon Homes is a short section of upscale houses along Indian River Road with a spectacular view of the Indian River. The houses have a small copse of woods to the west that helps to block out the noise coming from the typically bustling North Cocoa Boulevard highway. Living along the river should be tranquil and, while the trees do help cut down the noise, during the day, it might be a bit of an issue.
On the west side of US-1 is a small strip mall with a Big Lots, Tractor Supply Company, and a China Garden Restaurant. However, if you need groceries, it's only a short drive along Dixon Road to a Sav-a-Lot grocery store and a little further to Harvey's Supermarket and a Walgreens. Is this still not enough? The nearest Walmart Supercenter is less than ten minutes to the north on Clearlake Road. Here, you should be able to find everything you need for your family, including food and goodies for your pooch.
What is the terrain like in Dixon s Homes?
The terrain in this area is quite flat and shady, thanks to the trees to the west. Walking your dog out here should never be a problem! While US-1 is busy during the day, Indian River Road tends to be a little quieter. There is a sidewalk on the west side of this road the two of you can hike along. Do keep in mind that during the warmest months of the year, paved surfaces can become hot enough to burn your pup's pads.
A much better choice for your daily walks is to use the wide grass berm that forms the west bank of the Indian River. Many of the homes have boat and fishing docks jutting out into the water. The two of you can use the berm to go for long walks along the road for miles in either direction, enjoying the view out over the river while the boats sail by.
How many greenways are there in Dixon s Homes?
Beyond the riverbank, there are five large retention ponds on the other side of US-1 put in by the city as a fresh water supply to the wastewater treatment plant. The water is mixed into the incoming waste, treated, biologically cleansed, and filtered before it is used in the city's reclaimed water system. The ponds form Bracco Park and three of them have a paved walkway around them for you and your pooch to take long walks together.
To the north of Bracco Park, there is yet another area with multiple lakes for you and your pup to explore. Access to this area is via Michigan Avenue. Those who drive to use the trails for walking their dog can park on the sides of the trailhead. The trail leads along the railroad tracks, then dives back into the woods before coming out at the lakes. This is a fabulous place to take your dog out for long walks away from the crowds.
