Holly Hill is a town of approximately 12,000 people, sandwiched between Ormond Beach and Daytona Beach on the mainland side of the area. After suffering a minor decline in population due to the recession, the town is on the rebound with the job market on the rise. Summers here can be sweltering with temperatures in the 90s which means you need to limit your walks to the early morning hours before the sidewalks have time to heat up.
What is the terrain like in Holly Hill?
The terrain here is a blend of both pavement and natural flora and fauna. The ground is flat which can make finding a way to get in plenty of fun exercise with your dog a little harder than it might be if there were hills to include in your strolls. But since there aren't, you will have to make do with choosing a different route each day in your particular neighborhood to get in that much-needed exercise.
One of the best walks is along Riverside Dr. There is a sidewalk that runs between the street and the river for you to explore. The trail takes you to Sunrise Park where the path leads around the park and all the way out to a pier. If you really want a challenge, take a ride over to the beachside where you can enjoy the challenges of walking in soft sand or playing in the surf.
How many greenways are there in Holly Hill?
Holly Hill residents are lucky in that they have lots of greenways in between the housing communities, businesses, and the rest of the Greater Daytona Beach area. Parks like Centennial Park and Sunrise Park are dog-friendly, but you must keep your pup on a leash while you walk or play with him. If this doesn't sound like much fun, Riviera Oaks Park is a dog park created from a previously flooded area. This park offers three different fenced-in sections for small to large dogs, plenty of water stations, benches in the shade for you to rest on, and a trail that goes around the small lake in the middle.
If you really want to get back to nature on your hikes, Tomoka State Park is to the north above Ormond Beach and is very popular with the geo-caching crowd. There is a 1/2-mile long nature trail, primitive camping spots, and plenty of fishing off the dock to enjoy.
