Just blocks from Lake Michigan's coast, North Center is a neighborhood that exemplifies all the qualities people love about the historic Windy City. Good food, live music, and outdoor activities are on every corner in the neighborhood. Its original founders were predominantly German, giving antiquated buildings in the area a distinctly European touch. But today, Chicago's neighborhoods are known to be extremely ethnically diverse, making way for a plethora of dining, entertainment, and shopping experiences.

Sometimes referred to as St. Ben's, North Center is close to grocery stores, supermarkets, fast food chains, as well as locally-owned restaurants which makes walking to complete errands easy and quick. This region is also known for its award-winning public schools, making it a popular place for families.

Chicago's efficient Chicago Transit Authority system reaches far enough north to include the North Center neighborhood which is good news for anyone who prefers to get around the city without a car.

Due to the heavy foot traffic cities are used to, Chicago's North Center neighborhood is decorated with pedestrian crosswalks, four-way stop signs, sidewalks, and bike lanes. Getting from point A to B with your dog should not be an issue. Whether you're trudging down a busy avenue or a quiet side street, you won't have to worry about stepping into the street for lack of sidewalks.

Depending on the level of excitement you're looking for, you're welcome to explore busier avenues such as Damen and Western or Addison and West Belmont. State highway IL-19 is a four-lane byway, yet still has sidewalks on both of its sides.

If your dog is frightened by loud traffic or meeting too many strangers, keep to calmer blocks. Around Horner Park and west of Western Avenue are some cozier corners of North Center where lawns, brownstone apartment buildings, and quaint homes decorate the area, promising a slower paced and more relaxing walk.

Once home to a brick factory in the late 1800s, Revere Park is now a local favorite for sports and afterschool programs of all kinds. Soft turf playgrounds, multiple fields and courts for recreational activities, and club and field houses make this park popular for school-age children and active adults alike.

Horner Park is another North Center gem where citizens of all ages can enjoy unique, fun classes such as woodworking, American Sign Language, and glow-in-the-dark sports! This volunteer-powered, city-financed park is a jewel to Chicago urbanites looking to stay active during the hot summers and the chilling winters. This multi-acre park has plenty for humans to enjoy, but attractions for canines, too, including the Horner Dog Park.

Just northeast of Horner Park is Welles Park. Welles is still extremely popular with locals due to its sports fields, playgrounds, and large, paved sidewalks. Your dog is likely to enjoy a simple stroll through the area as much as you are.
