Barkin' Springs is a quirky scene and attracts an eclectic group of people and their pooches, but that is part of its charm! Though alcohol was once permitted on the beach, it is now strictly prohibited and enforced by the pawlice. Be forewarned that there are some people who like to enjoy the beach topless.
Though the signs for Barkin' Springs do say that pupperonis must be leashed here, most are not, and the pawlice allow dogs to enjoy the waters without a lead on. If your pooch is of the sort that likes to wander, it is likely best that you keep them leashed. Bring along drinking water and clean-up bags to this pawtastic swimming haven as none are provided.
There is no sand at Barkin' Springs, but there is a large grass area leading down to a platform which is comprised of concrete and rocks. You and your main canine squeeze can relax in the grass and even enjoy a packed lunch from home there. Watch your tender tootsies on the concrete and rocks as it can get pawrifically hot and hard on the feet. When wet, it is also doggone slippery! The pool itself is subject to strong currents which pull you and your doggo downstream.
To find Barkin' Springs, park in the lot for Barton Springs pool and walk on the outside portion of the fence. This will lead you towards the downstream area. There is a small hill that will take you along steps with an incline. Just past that is the entrance to Barkin' Springs.
