When in the Fort Myers Beach, Florida area, beaches are plentiful! But lots of rules and regulations restrict dogs' freedom on beaches, and some don't allow them at all! Not at the Bonita Beach Dog Park! Also called the Lee County Dog Beach and Lover's Key Dog Park, here, pooches can romp free in the sand and water to their heart's content!
Located in southwest Florida in Lee County, this strip of beach is on the outside edge of Lover's Key State Park along the Fort Myers/Bonita Springs line on Lover's Key. This hidden gem cannot be seen from Estero Road, but signs by the trees will show you the way to the beach. Parking is along the road, so you'll have to walk to the beach area. The beach is variable in size due to the tide, as is the walk in. You may have to wade through water at high tide to get to the beach area, so if you have a little dog, or just want to stay dry yourself, plan your trip during low tide times.
Once here, your lucky pup can play and romp off leash! Though a small stretch of beach, it offers enough room for pooches of all sizes to socialize and splash in the water, and is the only off leash beach for dogs in the area. The water is calm and warm, and flows from the Gulf of Mexico. The water is shallow for a long way out, allowing for safe play. There is a sandbar where you can rest and enjoy your day in the sun with your furry friend. Since there aren't any fences, be sure your dog recalls well. Portable toilets for humans are available, but do bring clean-up bags for your pup. Trash containers are on site. Best of all, this beach has a special doggy shower area with two shower heads to accommodate big and little pooches. Be sure to tote in drinking water for you and your pup too!
When hanging out on the dog beach, you’re asked to follow the Lee County regulations. These include cleaning up after your dog at all times, as well as keeping aggressive dogs and dogs in heat on leash. Also, only two dogs are allowed per person to this beach pupperdise.
While weekends are busy, the beach is much less crowded during the week. Whenever you decide to visit, your pup is sure to have a blast at the Bonita Beach Dog Park!
