Description

The Village of Ocean Beach is one of many small communities along Fire Island, New York. Over the years, Fire Island has gotten more popular, especially with it being just about an hour outside New York City. Ocean Beach, as one of the larger villages on Fire Island, has a number of restaurants, shops, and other attractions to keep you busy and having fun.

There are tennis courts, ball fields, and even a bayfront playground, perfect for a weekend getaway with your pooch. The beach is perfect for swimming, fishing, surfing, boating, windsurfing, or if you're feeling lazy, just lounging in the sun. Be sure to look up the weekend you are going, as the community hosts a number of cultural events throughout the summer that would be just another reason to get out to Fire Island.

Another plus: along the bay of Ocean Beach, the Village Marina welcomes boaters! Whether you are going for a day trip or renting a house for the weekend, Ocean Beach is the spot for you! The sand is soft and white, while the blue rolling waves can get pretty big for a bay-side beach!  Because eating on the beach is strictly prohibited, Ocean Beach will probably be the cleanest beach you've ever laid your eyes on. As a car-free community, visitors can simply hop on the Fire Island Ferry for a quick trip to your summer vacay. Roundtrip fares are $19 for adults and $9 for kids.

About half of the communities on Fire Island are strictly residential and have no bars, restaurants or other businesses, except for Seaview, which has just a market, liquor store, and nursery.

Dogs must be on leashes on our walkways and other Seaview Properties - (this is the law). Also, dog owners MUST clean up after their dogs

As a car-free community, visitors can simply hop on the Fire Island Ferry for a quick trip to your summer vacay. Those taking the ferry can either drive and park in one of the pay parking lots south of Main Street or take the Long Island Rail Road to the Bay Shore station and then take a cab or walk south to the terminal. Roundtrip Bay Shore ferry fares are $19 for adults and $9 for kids. One-way tickets for seniors are $9

Remember, as a popular spot, you should be mindful of others visitors and residents, and be sure to clean up after your pup!

While Ocean Beach generally allows leashed dogs to roam its shores, the Fire Island National Park Service does not allow doggos on the ocean beaches (including Ocean Beach) from March 15 until Labor Day. These restrictions are important in order to protect certain wildlife, particularly threatened and endangered species.

However, throughout this on-season period your pup can still accompany you:

  • On ferry rides between communities or water taxis
  • On park or ocean boardwalks
  • On other specific bayside beaches
  • On your boat (if applicable)

Remember, as a popular spot, you should be mindful of others visitors and residents, and be sure to clean up after your pup!
