The Oregon Inlet beaches provide a wealth of opportunities for fun along the coast. Some of the areas are fairly secluded, giving you a chance to enjoy some time relaxing or engaging in activities without having to worry about scores of passersby.
Fishing is one of the most popular activities throughout the Oregon Inlet area. Charter boats are commonly seen lining up in the early morning to head out into the bountiful waters and in the late afternoon after a pleasant day of fishing. Visitors can also bring their own boats if they prefer, allowing you to control your experience as you attempt to reel in Amberjack or sheepshead.
If you would rather enjoy a trip onto the water to observe a variety of sea creatures, tours are also available. You can take in the splendid scenery, head out in search of dolphins, or even enjoy a magnificent sunset trip around the Pamlico Sound.
Kayakers also flock to the area to experience navigating through the various small canals around the sound. Birdwatchers can also have an amazing outing thanks to the variety of species in the area.
The Oregon Inlet beaches also have 4WD vehicle areas, giving you a chance to race around on the sand. You do need a beach driving permit if you are going to hit the shoreline, though they are readily available from the nearby National Park Service station.
Dogs are welcome at the Oregon Inlet beaches provided they remain on a 6-foot leash at all times and are kept out of any bird enclosures. Pets may accidentally harm nesting adult birds as well as chicks and eggs, so they are not permitted in those areas.
If you bring your pooch to the Oregon Inlet beaches, you also need to carry baggies so you can remove any pet waste promptly. This helps ensure that the area remains clean and that no other visitors encounter any waste your dog may create.
