The Pamlico River City Park, also known as Havens Garden Park, is located just off Park Drive and is a lovely retreat a bit outside downtown Washington, North Carolina, but before you reach Runyon Creek Bridge. The small park is neat, tidy, and offers exactly the amenities you need, with none of those you don’t.Â
Guests will find two covered picnic shelters, a playground, fishing pier, plenty of green space for sporting activities and a boat ramp. While there is water access, swimming is not advised in the Pamlico River for anyone, particularly from this spot. Fishing is quite easily the most popular activity at this park, and ambitious fishermen can hope for smallmouth bass and baiting mullet, as well as crabs.Â
The park is free and open year-round, sunrise until sunset (restrooms close a few hours before). If you happen to stop by during either opening or close, you’ll catch some great views of the waterfront, perfect for a little romantic walk.Â
Keep in mind that the shoreline does flood during heavy rain periods, so caution should be taken. Never put yourself nor your dog in a risky situation.Â
When bringing your dog to this park, follow all posted signage and keep your dog on a standard leash of six feet or less. To prevent harm to others as well as your pet, keep them away from other people, children, and animals unless invited. As you would for any outing, make sure to pack all the necessary pet care supplies, including items needed to pick up after your dog, a portable water bowl, extra water, food or snacks, doggy booties, and a pet first aid kit.Â
It’s additionally wise to keep proof of your recent inoculations and vaccinations on hand and be sure your dog is up to date on all shots and medications before visiting any park, beach, or waterfront.Â
