Description

Featuring 1,000 acres of forested terrain and magnificent shoreline, South Higgins Lake State Park is an excellent destination for nature enthusiasts. You can escape the heat during the summer by taking a dip in the lake, including a fun frolic with your dog in one of the two pet-friendly coastline areas.

The park is home to a variety of mature trees, including oak, maple, and pine, and is filled with wildlife. If you want to learn interesting tidbits about the local flora and fauna, the park participates in the Outdoor Explorer Program, creating unique opportunities to discover more about this beautiful area.

Hiking is a favorite activity of visitors, thanks to the three developed trails. Bicycles are also allowed in the park and, in the winter, you can even cross-country ski across the landscape.

If you prefer to explore Higgins Lake, you have a few options available. You can take advantage of the boat launch if you have your own watercraft, or rent one onsite. Paddleboards, kayaks, and canoes are also welcome, giving you a chance to skim across the water while getting some exercise. Anglers can also fish during their visit, as long as they have the proper license.

For those who want to extend their stay, South Higgins Lake State Park has 400 modern campsites, making it the second largest campground located in a state park. The electrical and water systems were upgraded for the park’s 75th anniversary, making the campsites comfortable even though they are immersed in the natural surroundings.

Certain areas of the state park do allow hunting during designated seasons and with the proper license. While they are restricted to specific areas, it’s wise to always be vigilant in case a hunter accidentally crosses into populated areas.

If you choose to bring your dog to South Higgins Lake State Park, make sure they remain on a six-foot leash at all times. This keeps them under your control, ensuring they don’t bother other visitors or take off to chase the local wildlife. Additionally, make sure you are always ready to clean up after your dog. Not only is this polite, but it keeps the area free of waste, ensuring the park remains pristine.

Wag! does not allow or encourage Pet Care Providers to bring dogs to parks.
