Encompassing 1,952 acres along the coast of Lake Michigan, Warren Dunes State Park is an excellent recreational destination. Stunning sand dunes rise 260 feet above the lake, creating magnificent wildlife and scenic viewing opportunities - and even a platform to go hang gliding!
Within the park, there are six miles of trails that are open year-round. During warmer months, you can enjoy hiking among the mature trees. Once the snow falls, cross-country skiers can take advantage of the trails as well.
Swimming is also a favorite activity for visitors during the summer. You can take a dip in the designated swim areas, allowing you to cool off during the heat of the day. Picnic tables and shelters also dot the park. Plus, as an added convenience, there is even a concession stand that operates starting in May and through September, giving you access to food, beverages, ice cream, souvenirs, and more.
Rustic campsites are also available in the park. Fire rings are available at specific sites and can be used as long as there isn’t a burn ban in place. Hunting is allowed in Warren Dunes State Park within specific areas. While hunters are restricted to designated areas, it’s wise to remain vigilant at all times, just in case someone accidentally crosses into one of the recreational areas.
Warren Dunes State Park also has three miles of amazing shoreline. If you head north of the northernmost swim buoy, you can enjoy the pet-friendly area of the beach. While dogs must remain on a six-foot leash at all times, they are welcome to have a romp in the water and along the sandy shore in that area.
If you bring your dog to Warren Dunes State Park, make sure you clean up after them. Not only is this a legal requirement, but it also helps keep the area pristine, ensuring no one’s visit is ruined by waste.
