Make no bones about it, Amiptheater Campground is a paw-fect basecamp for a Fido-friendly Colorado mountain adventure! You’ll definitely have to sacrifice some of your creature comforts, as Amphitheater doesn’t have any showers, electricity or RV hookups. Never mind, though -- the campground's amazing location should go some way towards making up for it!Â
The eponymous Amphitheater is a striking geological formation that resulted from volcanic and glacial activity in the area, and you’ll be treated to a fabulous view of it (as well as the picturesque small town of Ouray) from your mountainside perch. You’re also surrounded by mature pine and oak trees, and the sight of the stars at night is hard to beat! And if you’re desperate to get clean, you can shower for $2 at the Ouray Hot Springs, just two miles away from camp. It’s definitely best to book early, particularly if you’ll need to stay at one of Amphitheater's two accessible sites.
As one might expect from this part of Colorado, the area surrounding Amphitheater Campground is something of a haven for hound-dog hikers. The Upper Cascade Falls Trail has a trailhead right inside the campground. Ideal for four-pawed fitness freaks, those with the stamina to complete the steep climb are rewarded by the sight of the majestic falls and breathtaking views of the mountaintops. The same trailhead leads to the Baby Baths Trail (a much easier option for laid-back lapdogs) and the Chief Ouray Mine Trail (a grrr-eat choice for cultured canines interested in the history of the area.
The quaint neighboring town of Ouray is definitely a mutts-visit! Just a bone’s throw away from camp, Ouray is known as America’s Switzerland for its charming, colorful houses and layout. It’s also home to some doggo-friendly dining options, including brilliant burger joint Maggie’s, which welcomes wagging tails outside.
Wifi isn’t available at Amphitheater, but all networks bar T-Mobile should receive at least some cellular coverage. Campfires are permitted, and you’ll find drinking water and trash collection on-site. Remember to bring waste bags for your buddy, and have a furrific trip!
