If you're looking for a fun destination with endless opportunities for recreation and wildlife viewing, consider making a stop at the Cherry Creek State Park campground. Over 40 species of mammals call the area home, including white-tailed deer, cottontail rabbits, ground squirrels, and black-tailed prairie dogs.
Majestic bald eagles can also be found perched in the park’s cottonwood trees or soaring through the skies. Red-tailed hawks, golden eagles, and other raptors also entice birdwatchers to the area as well as the opportunity to spot black-crowned night herons in the nearby wetlands.
Anglers can also enjoy some fishing at the park. You can take advantage of the public boat launches near the park entrances, giving you a chance to spend some time cruising across the beautiful waters while enjoying the scenery. Jet ski and boat rentals are available, making it easy to spend some time on the water even if you don’t have your own watercraft.
Biking and hiking trails are a great place for you and your dog to get some exercise and, during winter months, you can cross-country ski on the trails. Horseback riding is also permitted, and the nearby stables provide access to horse rentals, lessons, and hayrides, or you can board your horse there during your stay.
If you prefer something more lowkey, take advantage of one of the many picnic tables. You can also head to the park’s sandy beaches to hit the water and cool off during the hot summer months.
For an additional $2 a day, you can also access Cherry Creek State Park’s dog off-leash area. The space covers 107 acres and is fully fenced, giving your pooch a place to run around unencumbered and interact with other visiting dogs while you spend time strolling through the park, throwing a ball, or mingling with visitors. You do need to have voice control of your dog and must keep a leash with you at all times. Additionally, have bags at the ready so you can clean up after your pet, ensuring the area remains pristine and free of waste.
