Collegiate Peaks

Smart campers go to Collegiate Peaks — it’s one of the best campgrounds in Colorado! It is situated west of Buena Vista, and it is known for its spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and well-maintained amenities. It is also close to many outdoor recreation sites, so there are countless ways to pass the time and explore the area throughout your camping trip. And one of the campground’s greatest features is its dog-friendly policy, so you and your dog can head on over and enjoy some of Colorado’s finest camping together.

The campground is surrounded by a dense, coniferous forest, and it rests beside Middle Cottonwood Creek, whose trickling waters provide an enchanting ambiance that pervades the nearby campsites. The total number of campsites is 56, and they are organized around three loops. The nightly fee for a site is $20, but if you’re just staying the day, the fee is only $6. While you might want to just sit back, relax, and take in the scenery at the campsite, it would be a shame not to explore at least a few of the various outdoor activities in the area. Denny Creek Trailhead is nearby, providing a convenient location for a hike. There are also a number of other trails to be explored further from the campground. The creek next to the campground is also a popular spot for trout fishing.

There are a few things you should keep in mind when you are planning your trip. Remember that dogs must remain leashed at all times. Also note that this is an active bear area, so take the proper precautions. Finally, if you plan on fishing, be aware that this waders and boots should be disinfected because the spread of fungus may threaten local endangered toad species.
