Description

Want to immerse yourself in some of Virginia's most spectacular mountain scenery with your furry friend by your side? Make sure you check out Douthat State Park, which is nestled among the Allegheny Mountains 52 miles north of Roanoke.

Spread across 4,545 acres, this pretty park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has been a favorite with visitors since 1936. With more than 43 miles of trails to explore, the park has long been a huge hit with hikers, mountain bikers, and horse riders. Mountain bikers in particular are well catered to, with the park regularly mentioned as one of the best destinations for two-wheel enthusiasts anywhere on the East Coast.

If you prefer adventures that are aquatic in nature, the park features a 50-acre lake stocked with trout, a sandy swimming beach, and four miles of stream fishing. Boat rentals are also available for those who need some help getting out on the water.

Other park features include playgrounds, an amphitheater, picnic areas, and even a lakefront restaurant, so you can be sure of finding something to do every day of your visit.

When you're looking for somewhere to rest your head for the night, the pet-friendly campground boasts 75 inviting sites, many of which enjoy water views. There are also 32 pet-friendly cabins available, but take note that a $10 nightly fee applies per pet for cabin stays.

You'll also need to stick to all the rules and regulations regarding camping with your pet. These include disposing of your pet's waste whenever required and making sure your dog is always controlled and on a leash of six feet or shorter.

Douthat State Park combines beautiful mountain scenery with myriad opportunities for outdoor recreation and relaxation. If you're looking for somewhere to take a pet-friendly camping trip in the Allegheny Mountains, this beautiful park is well worth checking out.
