Elkhead Reservoir State Park, located in the Yampa Valley in Colorado approximately ten miles north of the city of Craig, is a combination camping and day-use destination. This park is popular for boaters and those who enjoy aquatic activities like swimming and skiing, as well as nature lovers looking to bird-watch, hike, and take pictures. There is a $7 entry fee for the park, and campsites start at $18 per night.
Winter recreation is also an attraction here, as snowmobiling and ice fishing along the reservoir is common. Cross-country skiing and snow-shoeing are popular as well. The park is open all year, but the campground itself is only open from April to November.
The state park is situated on 900 acres of land that encompasses the newly built Bear's Ears campground. Locals and visitors use this campground as a way to extend their day on the water as long as possible, setting up camp at night and getting up early to enjoy the adventures that await.
Sixteen pet-friendly campsites are available for you and Fido to get away from it all. The sites include fire pits, picnic tables, and shelters for shade. A CXT bathroom is located for campers on each end of the campground. Pets are allowed, and if your furry friends are well-behaved, they can be on a leash outdoors as long as you are on-site.
When you are ready to explore, there are trails throughout the park that will take you and Fido (on a leash) through lands that have some of the most scenic views in the area. Wildlife is extensive here, and you will likely see many raptors, mule deer, and pronghorn antelope.
Please note that there is no dump station at the Elkhead Reservoir State Park, but you can purchase a camping permit that allows you to use a nearby dump station. If you are visiting after Labor Day, be aware that hunting is allowed in the park during this time.Â
With all of the trails, recreational activities, and nearby attractions, it's no wonder the Elkhead Reservoir State Park attracts people from all over the country! Take Fido and get away from the hustle and bustle while you enjoy the beauty of nature at this park.
