James M. Robb – Colorado River State Park features five distinct sections – commonly referred to as a "string of pearls" – in western Colorado. These sections offer a diverse range of water-based recreation opportunities, not to mention the chance to relax and unwind in the great outdoors.
The Island Acres section is found at the eastern end of the park, in the scenic Debeque Canyon. It sits less than 20 miles northeast of Grand Junction and offers excellent opportunities for hiking, biking, fishing, and swimming. It's also a hugely popular spot with birdwatchers and is open 365 days a year.
If you're planning on staying the night, the Island Acres campground boasts 73 sites and includes a mixture of tent-only sites, electric sites, and full-hookup sites. Two playgrounds are also provided to keep the kids entertained.
A daily pass to enter the park is $7, and all campers must purchase a valid camping permit. Basic tent-only campsites cost $18 a night, electric campsites cost $24 a night, and full-hookup sites are $28 a night. Please note that although the campground is open all year round, the shower buildings and flush toilets are closed from November through March.
Leashed pets are welcome in the park and on the trails. However, pets are not allowed on the swimming beaches or in the swimming areas.
If you're visiting James M. Robb – Colorado River State Park with your pet, your pooch must be under control and on a leash of six feet or shorter at all times. As always, you'll need to make sure that you clean up your dog's waste whenever required – dog waste stations are provided throughout the park for that very purpose.
James M. Robb – Colorado River State Park is a unique park that provides a variety of memorable experiences. If you're traveling through the area with your dog, it's worth stopping in each of the park's separate sections to check out exactly what they have to offer.
