Switch things up for your next camping trip and take to Iowa's flatlands with your canine compadre in tow. It is here that you'll find Prairie Rose State Park, at the center of which is a large lake -- perfect for exploring via paddleboard! The park is located not far from the quaint town of Walnut, where you can get your dose of action at the Shelby County Speedway.
Focusing back on the camping, this park offers not one but two different areas to stay. In the east area, you'll find fancier amenities and sites with full hookup options. Over on the other side, you'll get more of a true outdoorsy feel with vault toilets and no hookups whatsoever. There are also two cabins up for grabs at the park and you'll be happy to know they both are canine-friendly! Fees to camp here start at $6 a night for off-season, tent-only campsites and jump up to $19 for a full hookup lot during the summer months.Â
For those that choose to visit Prairie Rose in the summer months, the lake is definitely the place to be. Whether you plan on lazing around on the sandy beach or kayaking the hours away, you're sure to find most of the other campers out there with you. When you need a break from the waves, grab Fido and head for the 7 miles of trail that run through the park. If you feel like gaining knowledge while on your trek, check out the interpretive trail, which will give you ample opportunity to learn about the native flora and fauna.Â
As in most Iowa parks, your barky buddy is allowed in many sections of the park, but they may not go in any restrooms or on the designated beach area. Be sure to keep them leashed throughout your stay and always scoop up whatever mess they leave behind.
To have a great time in Iowa's grasslands, add Prairie Rose State Park to your must-visit list!
