Walnut Woods State Park

This campground offers 24 campsites that all feature full hookups and electrical hookups, making them perfect for both tents and RVs. While you’re at the campground, you and your dog will find tons of pawesome things to do together.

If you and your dog love hiking together, there are lots of great trails in Walnut Woods State Park for you to explore. This includes the 3-mile Raccoon River Trail. This trail takes you along the peaceful Raccoon River. Walnut Woods State Park’s campground is also close to the Blue Heron Lake Loop Trail, a lovely 3.3-mile trail that takes you around Blue Heron Lake. Both of these trails are mostly flat, and they’re home to over 90 bird species, including warblers, hawks, owls, flycatchers, and songbirds.

Walnut Woods State Park is also just a short drive from Des Moines, a great place to go on a day trip with your dog. This city is home to numerous parks that welcome dogs on and off-leash, a beautiful botanical garden that allows dogs, and lots of dog-friendly restaurants.

After you’re finished with your day’s adventures, you and your pup can relax and enjoy the many amenities at Walnut Woods State Park’s campground. The campground is located right by the Raccoon River, which is a popular place to go fishing, kayaking, and canoeing. When you get hungry, you can grill up burgers or hot dogs for you and your dog at one of the campground’s charcoal grills. You can then enjoy your meal at the campground’s riverside picnic area. If you’d like to build a campfire, you can buy firewood at the campground.
