Wilderness Gateway

Wilderness Gateway is considered one of the best campgrounds in the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest near Kooskie, Idaho, and it isn't hard to see why! This campground offers visitors access to the Wild and Scenic Lochsa River where they can enjoy whitewater rafting and a variety of other outdoor activities. The campground has 91 campsites, including a group camping loop, a stock loop, and other loops for tent and RV campers with both reservable and first-come-first-serve options. If you bring your dog along to enjoy this campground with you, make sure you always clean up after them and keep them on a leash.

The group camping area can accommodate up to 208 people and 52 vehicles, and the campground is suitable for RVs up to 50 feet. The stock loop is equipped with feed mangers and water troughs for livestock. Each of the RV and tent camping sites has a picnic table and a campfire ring with a grill. Flush toilets and accessible vault toilets are available on-site, as is drinking water. Across from the campground is a group day-use shelter that can accommodate up to 200 people for picnics and other activities. Campers should note that there's no cell phone service at the campground, and they'll have to travel nearly 50 miles to get reception.

There are several places to access the river near Wilderness Gateway, and while it's most commonly used for whitewater rafting, it's also a great spot for fly fishing. Campers can also hike several trails near the campground of varying distances and difficulty. For a quick journey, opt for the half-mile Downriver Trail. If you're up for a more strenuous adventure, choose the 27-mile Boulder Creek Trail.

With the exception of the group sites, each campsite can accommodate up to eight guests and two vehicles. Single campsites cost $14 daily, while the group site can be rented for $280. If you plan on bringing an extra vehicle, you'll be subject to an additional $2 fee each day. You and your pooch are sure to love this pawtastic campground!
