The Astro Dog Park is just one of four off-leash dog parks in Huntsville, Alabama. This dog park or dog spot as they like to call them in Huntsville is in the city's Southside Park which provides residents with some diverse recreational facilities that include many different amenities.
There is a disc golf course, children's playground and an archery park which is open all year round, but all the local pups want to do is head straight from the parking lot to the off-leash dog park. Huntsville understands very well what makes a dog tick and have designated space for their off-leash exercising which is larger than two football fields put together.Â
One part of the dog park is for small breeds only and to enter there they need to be less than twenty-five pounds in weight. Both off-leash sections are heavily wooded so not the best of places for throwing a disc or ball, but the dogs love it as it's a fantastic place to explore.Â
It does mean pet parents need to go foraging amongst the trees for their fur child's poop, but that's just all part and parcel of being a pet parent. This is an amazing off-leash dog park in Huntsville and pet parents living there are privileged to have access to it for free.Â
The Huntsville authorities don't ask too much in return for the favor they've blessed the community with. They do like a dog to be sterilized by the time its a year old as this really does help prevent social aggression between fur friends at the dog park. They also require all dogs to be vaccinated against rabies.Â
If a pet parent isn't confident about how their furbaby is going to behave, they do suggest maintaining it on a twenty-foot leash but let the leash trail free. While this may be a great idea in the other Huntsville dog parks, it doesn't work quite so well here as the leash will end up getting wrapped around a tree trunk or snagged in the undergrowth.
