Balcones District Park runs along Amherst Drive in North Austin, and is a great place for people and pups to get together. This park has everything that a family-oriented neighborhood park should, as well as expansive natural areas that are a breath of fresh air. It's ideal to pass through on your walk with Fifi, or spend the afternoon stretched out on the cool grass with a book.
Once you enter the park, you'll find a parking lot, with various other amenities such as drinking fountains and restrooms. From the north end of the parking lot, you can hook onto the Northern Walnut Creek Trail. This 10 foot wide multi-use path travels through Balcones District Park, and continues 3.2 miles to Walnut Creek Park, which is a hub to a more extensive trails system. Another option is the Balcones District Park Trail which has a more natural feel and does a loop around the park. It can be accessed behind the pool, and leads to a lovely waterfall when the creek is flowing after a rainfall. There are no signs for the trails, just openings in the woods. On your travels, you'll come across hilly terrains with rocky slopes, charming bridges, and blooming wildflowers.
This park has plenty of other features that make it a great place for a family outing. Here you'll find a basketball court, volleyball court, an outdoor pool, a kids play area, and lots of wide open space for your pupper to sniff and play on. There are always meet ups happening here, for yoga, cycling and other fun community activities.
Doggos are more than welcome here, and you're likely to encounter other furry friends as well. Please be sure you canine stays leashed, picked up after, and respectful to others at all times. Don't forget to bring along some drinking water for you and your pal, and clean-up bags.
Balcones District Park is a puppy pleaser every time!
