Big Spring State Park

In Southern Pennsylvania near Harrisburg, Big Spring State Forest Picnic Area is a quaint little spot to visit if you’re looking for a place to hike or picnic. The park is named for Big Spring, which forms the nearby scenic Shermans Creek. The area around the park is now mostly wild but has a history with manufacturing and the railroad during the 19^th century. 

With 45 acres and beautiful scenery, Big Spring State Forest Picnic Area is worth checking out. There is a partially completed railroad tunnel that visitors may explore. At the railroad tunnel is historical information that visitors can enjoy. The park also has a short trail loop, which leads to the Iron Horse Trail, a ten-mile trail that is open for both day and overnight hiking.

Big Spring State Forest Picnic Area has pavilions that can be used for covered picnics or small group gatherings. Though Big Spring State Forest Picnic Area is a small park area, there are a number of other state park or recreation areas within 30 miles, many that offer overnight camping.

In Pennsylvania, pets are allowed in day-use areas and some campgrounds, but be respectful of posted signs that indicate where dogs are prohibited. Keep pets leashed or in a crate or cage at all times and never leave them unattended. Do not bring aggressive dogs or those that disturb other park visitors or the local wildlife. Make sure you bring proof of current rabies vaccine.

If you take your dog hiking with you, be aware of hazards on the trails and bring sufficient water for you and your pet.
