The Bear Creek Nature Area within Cosmo Park is in the city of Columbia, Missouri. The nature area is about 70 acres and located on the north end of the park. Patrons can enjoy the many features Cosmo has to offer like a skatepark, baseball diamonds, a golf course, volleyball, about four different running trails and more. There is something for everyone at Cosmo so bring your friends along with their dogs too!
The C.C.R.A. Bear Creek Nature Area Off-Leash Area is the only section of the Cosmo Park that is leash free for dogs. However, 70 acres is quite a bit of room for pets to run around, so it is likely you and Fido will not be able to explore the whole area in one visit. Do not get the nature area confused with the nature trail because the trail does not permit off-leash dogs.
If you decide to walk on or near the path, please put your dog on a leash if you are walking at least 50 feet away. The hiking trail lasts about 4.3 miles and lets out at Oakland Park. So use that as your guide if your dog is okay with being on a leash. The C.C.R.A. Bear Creek Nature Area Off-Leash Area boasts large trees, shrubbery, plants and plenty of lush green grass.
If you walk towards the south end of the field, you will come across a medium-sized lake where fishing is permitted. However, you will need a valid Missouri fishing license. The lake is still part of the off-leash area so feel free to take your dog along for the adventure. The C.C.R.A. Bear Creek Nature Area Off-Leash Area and the City of Columbia ask that dogs are off-leash at your own risk.
Please also help keep the park clean by picking up after yourself. There are no more than four dogs permitted to enter per family. If you choose not to follow park rules, you are subject to be fined by security. Overall, the C.C.R.A. Bear Creek Nature Area Off-Leash Area is an excellent place for dogs of all sizes since the area is large enough to have a ton of space. They’ll enjoy their time at this park!
