Cherry Avenue Dog Park is a large, public dog park located in Sayville, New York. The 1.5-acre dog park was opened in 2007 by Suffolk County Parks and Recreation. It is located south of the Baymen Soccer Club fields and is easily accessible by both car and foot. Parking is usually not a problem and can hold up to 30 cars at a time.
The spacious park is enclosed with a 4-ft high fence, a double-gated entry system, and it has an overall well-thought-out layout. It consists of two separate dog areas, one for the smaller dog breeds (under 25 pounds) and the other for the larger hounds. Both areas are equipped with running water and water bowls and are covered by wood chips to prevent dogs from getting dirty, especially after rainfall.
Though there are plenty of trash cans, dog owners do have to bring their own dog waste bags and are encouraged to bring extra plastic bags to donate, this way patrons that might have forgotten theirs can still clean up after their dogs and remain respectful of the park’s grounds.
The dog park does lack shade and seating can be limited as there are only a few benches in the off-leash areas, causing many owners to bring their own lawn chairs. Despite that, this hidden gem is highly appreciated by the community and most of the patrons of the dog park are regulars with friendly, well-behaved dogs. Though there are no bathrooms nearby there are lots of restaurants within a few minutes drive.
All in all, this well-maintained dog park has plenty of space for canines of all breeds and sizes to explore and play with one another in a clean, safe environment. The fencing is very sturdy and the double-gated entry prevents dogs from slipping out, allowing owners to have a peace of mind during their dog’s playtime.
