Renown for being one of the most gorgeous parks in the state, Crawford State Park is on the edge of the Ozarks. It is near the Frontier Military Historic Byway and has a flavor all its own. This treasure in southeast Kansas surrounds a 150-acre lake which was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930’s.Â
Two archaeological sites are in the park, and they include the remnants of a 19th-century military outpost. This pet-friendly 500-acre site has six campgrounds with 28 primitive sites and 38 electric only sites. All of the campsites can be reserved in advance, and they have a stunning view of the lake.Â
The group use area situated at the south end of the lake has electricity and are ideal for club campouts, family reunions, and other group activities. Those checking in at one of the five lakefront rental cabins have all the comforts of home with the additional beautiful lake setting.Â
Open all year round; the cabins are only available by reservation. Aside from boating, fishing, and camping, there are also other recreational pursuits such as hiking, biking, and swimming. Other amenities in the premises are three bathhouses, two boat ramps, a dump station, and courtesy docks.Â
There are delicious meals available at the marina from Friday breakfast through Sunday if you do not fancy bringing your packed food. Summer months are much livelier with campground programming for all visitors to enjoy. There is also excellent fishing for anglers to enjoy, with crappie, channel catfish, and striped bass.Â
Nature lovers will be delighted with the vast array of colorful wildflowers, butterflies, and birds which usually come out during spring. The surrounding forest’s lush foliage is something to behold and experience. Spike is allowed on the trails, but not in swimming areas or picnic buildings.Â
Dogs cannot be left by themselves anywhere inside the Crawford State Park and must be on a leash not longer than ten feet. The campground has a dog walk area where pooches can exercise and socialize but be informed that there are no water hook-ups at the campground.Â
